STEM Education

“STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise…”
(Tsupros, 2009)

Ascension provides STEM instruction that is developmentally appropriate, depending upon the grade level of our students.  Our approach is project-based and collaborative to help students build skills in teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and academic confidence.

Benefits of a STEM curriculum are:
  • STEM teaches critical thinking and problem solving skills, and encourages strong literacy skills.
  • STEM requires the interpretation of technical texts, a vast knowledge of content-specific vocabulary, critical thinking, and the ability to clearly communicate these complex concepts to others verbally and in writing.
  • STEM educational principles are also critical to developing strong mathematical thinkers.
  • STEM emphasizes the importance of understanding problems, developing and using models to solve problems, constructing viable arguments based on evidence, and critiquing the reasoning of others.
